NIGHTMARES

FIVE MILES FROM THE SUN

Five miles from the sun,
Across the veldt of matted grass
To the horizon where lies safe pass
On a bicycle built for one.

Four miles from the sun,
Sinking, blazing ball aglow.
And you, with no trail on which to go,
Only the clumpy fields undone.

Three miles from the sun,
Falling quickly to the ground,
Trapping you where the dead are found
In an unsafe zone with no gun!

Two miles from the sun,
Vanished below the skyline!
Darkness envelops the faint light.
Twelve killed by wild beasts on the run.

One mile to go, in the dark,
Pumping the peddles with breathless strain.
No stars in the sky to light the way.
Then can be heard a pack-dog's bark!
